BenBarberprofile300.jpgIn his key note lecture for the British Council's 75th anniversary series of talks, Haring Woods consultant Benjamin Barber urged the democratic state to promote alternatives to a heavily commercialised, monochrome artistic climate.  His animated, and at times controversial address, he explored the history and relationship between the arts and democracy, culminating in the long standing question - can or should the arts be a driver for social change?

Joined by a panel of leading cultural commentators and arts practitioners, including Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry, comedian Natalie Haynes, Paul Heritage of People's Palace Projects and chaired by BBC Arts Correspondent Razia Iqbal, Ben discussed whether an industry goal of instrumentality would be an act of patriotism, autonomy or subversion.

Haring Woods discuss the 'Arts and Cultural Diplomacy' at years Interdependence Day, Istanbul
For the past six years Haring Woods has developed and managed the Green Heart Partnership, a partnership initiative with the eleven local authorities across the county of Hertfordshire, UK.  The aim of the partnership has been to bring together the arts and environment sectors to collaboratively achieve sustainable solutions for the public realm. The legacy that will be left by GHP’s working processes is a form of creative and effective partnership working which has resulted in more efficiency and closer working relationships.

Haring Woods are collaborating with digital artists Mongrel X who are renowned for engaging marginalized groups in digital media arts and emerging technologies for self expressions, communication and social change.  Haring Woods and Mongrel X are developing a London based project which will be showcased as part of the wider Place on Earth programme which is being developed in partnership with UN Habitat.

For three years Haring Woods have worked closely with our colleague Benjamin Barber to develop debate and discussion on the role arts and culture play in our society as part of his international initiative Interdependence Day.  For this year’s Interdependence Day events in Istanbul, Haring Woods joined leaders from government, the arts, media and youth movements for three days of intense and challenging dialogue.
