Two forms of journeys- real and imaginary - inform the final works. The real stories are culinary journeys taken from workshops and dialogues with local workers in the London Bridge area. The imaginary food journeys were inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. During the participatory events market traders, London Underground Staff, Roast restaurant workers and Southwark College catering students, and the artist collaborated to explored personal memories related to food. The part takers experimented on tasting food while blind folded and food sculpting techniques as well as exploring the area recording responses to sights, smells and sounds through a variety of mediums such as drawing and writing. The three commissions are three large-scale photographs placed in public areas of London Bridge and Southwark Underground Station. The collaborative creative process that took place to produce these images turned the local community into co-authors of the space they share on everyday life basis through a subject that is common to us all: Food. | | |
