Haring Woods were invited by UN Habitat to develop a new programme to support their youth and climate change initiative, with the focus on communicating young people’s views about climate change, governance and rapid urbanisation to the UN stakeholders and decision makers.
Place on Earth is a creative engagement process led by artists to capture the perceptions of young people in cities around the world about climate change and rapid urbanisation. The process will generate new collaborative artworks supported by quantatitive information. Young people’s awareness, understanding and fears about these issues as they affect them in local and global contexts will be used to inform UN delegates and decision and policy makers.
A new international initiative with
UN-HABITAT giving young men and women a collective voice on the issues of climate change and sustainable urbanization through governance and culture. |
UN Habitat is the only UN constituent which works directly with municipalities. While they administer and support many programmes specifically aimed at young people, Place on Earth will be a valuable conduit between young people, local government and the UN to provide the information delegates need to develop viable policies on climate change and its impact on rapidly growing cities.
Since the start of the project in April 2009, we have attracted partners in the arts and governance, who respond positively to Place on Earth’s direct route to decision makers. Our aim is to produce a major presence at the World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro in March 2010 with the project continuing through and beyond the UN Summit on Sustainable Development 2012.
