Haring Woods at Interdependence Day 2009

IdayIstanbul.jpgThe focus of this year's Interdependence Day will be on Art, Religion and the City in the Developing world of Interdependence.

Haring Woods will be reporting on their work in a panel discussion: The Arts and Cultural Diplomacy, and will be joined by leaders from government, the arts, media and youth Movements in Istanbul, 10-12
September, to discuss transnational economic, cutural and political concerns.

Interdependence Day is an international initiative developed by Haring Woods associate Benjamin Barber and his NGO CivWorld, with think tank Demos, USA which aims to raise awareness of the interdependent character of global society and foster transnational and interdependent solutions to global challenges.

Haring Woods has participated in Interdependence Day 2006, in Morroco, 2007 in Mexico City, Brussels in 2008, with The Art of Common Space featuring as a leading theme.  This year Haring Woods are joining Barber in Istanbul and will feature on the panel:

THE ARTS AND CULTURAL DIPLOMACY: THE CULTURE OF STATES
This panel will look at Cultural diplomacy as an emerging instrument of global relations in which the arts play a central role in creating inter-civilizational dialogue and improving civic understanding; organizations like the British Council, the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, the international Society of Performing Arts and Haring Woods will report on their work.

Other interdependent concerns that will be discussed throughout the three day programme include women, development and Islam and other panel topics include new technologies, women and Interdependence,
Islam, cultural diplomacy and the arts.

Interdependence Day Founder Dr. Benjamin Baber will be joined in Istanbul by international delegates including Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Professor Tariq Ramadan, Seyla Benhabib, Imam Dr. Abdul Sajid, Olara Otunnu, Adam Michnik and Turkish supporters and contributors Cem Mansur, Ahmet Oren, Osman Kavala and the mayor of Istanbul Kadir Topbas.

 

Eileen Woods is a member of the Global Steering Committee, which includes Jacqueline Davis (USA) Executive Director of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Sebastian Escultor (Mexico) one of Mexico’s most prominent living sculptors and co-host of Interdependence Day 2007, Guy Gypens (Belgium) Artistic Director of the Kaaitheater, and Host of Interdependence Day 2008, Lord Frank Judd (UK) parliamentarian and international negotiator, Adam Michnik (Poland) co-founder of Solidarity (Solidarnosc), editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, the first independent Polish newspaper, Claus Offe (Germany) Professor of Political Science at The Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Saskia Sassen (USA) one of the foremost thinkers on cities in a global context and Cornel West (USA) Professor at the Center of African American Studies Princeton University.
