Place on Earth

Digital technologies pervade every aspect of modern society. In many parts of the world, information communication technology (ICT) has
transformed the way people share information which improves the way children and adults learn, and helps governments address social
and economic issues, in ways never previously imagined. However these opportunities are not enjoyed by the whole of the UK population. For
example, 17 million people in the UK still do not use computers and the internet and there is a strong correlation between digital exclusion and
social exclusion. At its most fundamental level, digital inclusion addresses the concept that all people should have the opportunity and skills to
use the unlimited power of technology to realise their full potential through access to digital arts and cultural experiences that they would not otherwise be able to achieve.

Digital inclusion is a global initiative for Mongrel X, but is implemented locally to meet the specific needs of each community in partnership with
governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local authorities and FE Colleges. The commitment to advancing digital inclusion
revolves around a comprehensive long-term effort to provide alternative ICT access, education and skills training that will enable marginalised
communities and hard to reach groups reach for and embrace new opportunities. In today’s knowledge economy, people without access to
ICT and the skills they need to use it effectively are excluded from educational and economic opportunities that can enable them not only to improve their own lives, but also contribute to resolving other pressing social problems.

Haring Woods are working with Mongrel X as the lead artists to deliver the first London Place on Earth team. Mongrel X is an international award
winning creative team who work with popular emerging technologies to give young men and women a voice on current socio/political issues. Their innovative ‘iStreet Lab’ will be used to deliver the Place on Earth project. This first London project will work primarily with marginalised youth existing outside of any formal structure, street gangs, NEETs (not in
employment, education or training), and at risk youth. The Mongrel X team will identify the project participants through their informal and
established networks.
